Farming in srilanka

 


Srilanka has been an agricultural country from ancient times.srilankan farmers grow paddy and other grains.such as finger millet,green gram,corn etc.paddy is most commonly grown in our country. Rice is the staple food in our country.

There were no machines or chemical fertilizers in past.The farmers helped each other the paddy field was phoughed with the help of buffoloes .Buffalo phoughs are seen even today in rural areas harvesting poddy was an important event in the village.

In the past,even the kings participated in the ploughing ceremony and it was called "vap magula" in ancient times reaping paddy was aninteresting activity in the village because of the reapers recited "goyam leavi"most people are still farmilier .with this tradition ,be cause now it is presented as a dance form on stage.

The threshing floor is the place where the reaped crops were gatherred buffaloes were used to thresh the paddy.both men and women jolned in to winnow the paddy.at past srilanka called as the grenary of the east.
